Welcome to the Derbyshire Villages index on www.derbyphotos.co.uk. On this page you will find an ever expanding A to Z listing of villages, hamlets and towns across the County of Derbyshire. The list will be added to over the years to include more and more locations, as I am an amateur photographer running this website strictly in my spare time, it will probably take more than a lifetime to cover every single village in Derbyshire. It is highly unlikely that I will be able to complete this task.

As I live in Derby, the list will tend to include locations nearer to the City of Derby, but as you can see there are several places listed which are at the extremes of the borders of Derbyshire such as the Hadfield in the north (the place where the BBC TV series the League of Gentlemen was filmed) and Swadlincote in the south.

If you would like to learn how the names of many Derbyshire villages came about then I would highly recommend a book
Derbyshire Place Names (In Old Photographs)
This book is a dictionary of place-names, their origins and their meanings, including districts, towns, villages and hamlets, together with notable
buildings. The book features numerous photographs, nine of these images have been supplied by myself. I am not on commission for sales of this book but if you would like to see my images in print then please buy it. If the book sells well then a full colour version may be published!
Each village that I feature on my website will have some history as well as photos. Some of the early villages that I featured on my site may not have many photographs But in time I will try and revisit these and update the pages with additional images. All the locations on this page are in the county of Derbyshire, places which are in the City of Derby, are NOT in this list, they have their own index on the main page. If you have any additional information which you feel I have missed off any of the pages then please let me know and I will add it.
If you would like to purchase any of the images to use for brochures, magazines, calendars, leaflets etc then please get in touch.

Derbyshire is England’s midmost county. Bounded by the Dove, the Trent and the Erewash, the boundary determined by the Danish conquerors, it contains some of the finest scenery in the country and some of the wildest, as well as some of the grimmest industrial landscapes that would delight none but Lowry.
It is the cradle of the industrial revolution and contains many reminders of some of the men who bought it about such as Brindley, Arkwright and Strutt.
It has some of the most spectacular caverns in Britain, more than its fair share of distinguished and beautiful country houses, historic towns, houses and places associated with famous people.
It boasts some of the best scenery and walking country in Britain. The most famous house is probably Chatsworth House, home to the Duke of Devonshire. From the spectacular tors of the north and the unequalled beauty of the Dales down to the gently rolling south, Derbyshire can match all moods.

So what are you waiting for, get out there and enjoy Derbyshire today!
