Photos of Shardlow, Derbyshire, England. The village of Shardlow is located just within the Derbyshire boundary on the Trent & Mersey canal where it meets with the River Trent. Shardlow is located 8 miles south east of Derby and is a rare surviving example of an inland river and canal port. The Derwent and Trent meet just a few hundred metres to the east. Shardlow developed rapidly following the opening of the canal in 1777. Built by James Brindley, the Trent and Mersey Canal joined with the Bridgwater Canal near Runcorn. It was an integral part of Brindley's 'Grand Cross' plan in which he proposed to link the Mersey with the Thames and the Trent with the Severn. The canal allowed the cheap transportation of goods and raw materials from the Potteries. The canal first arrived in 1770 and Shardlow was transformed into a busy port with a plethora of basin, wharf and warehouse development. The heritage centre is housed in the old Salt Warehouse at the heart of the port. The Salt Warehouse is located a few yards from the Clock Warehouse. The later was originally Mill No.2 and dates from 1780. As a corn mill, it was owned by F.E.Stevens but is now a busy pub belonging to Mansfield Breweries. The segmental arch which spanned an arm of the canal has been converted into a decorative feature with part of an old barge projecting from a restaurant. |
