Photos of Matlock Bath, Derbyshire, England Matlock Bath is one of those places that you always remember from your child hood. It is a small town situated on the A6 and is a popular place with the motorcycling community. If you own a bike then this is the place to come and show it off on a Sunday. Matlock is well known for its night time illuminations, these range from thousands of lights along the river to boats with animated/illuminated displays on them. There are also large firework displays during the summer/autumn seasons. If like me, you love photography then I would highly recomend you visit the Life in a Lens museum. It is dedicated to presenting the history of popular photography from its invention in 1839 to more recent times, it has a strong Victorian flavour and is presented as an informative entertainment for people of all ages and walks of life. Situated in a Victorian building dating from 1861, which was renovated especially for the purpose at 118, North Parade, Matlock Bath. For more info please visit their site HERE. Matlock Bath is situated in glorious countryside and is surrounded by some of the most dramatic scenery in the Derbyshire Dales. Byron referred to Matlock Bath as a romantic fragment of Switzerland set in the heart of England. If you would like to see what Matlock Bath looks like at night, I have a page with Matlock Bath illuminations on it HERE. Photos at Matlock Bath Aquarium Matlock Bath Aquarium is located at 110 North Parade and is a a popular attraction for visitors. All the attractions (listed below) are set in a lovely Victorian building which was formerly the Matlock Bath Hydro dating back to 1883. Remainders of it's former splendor can be seen in the fine stone staircase, the drinking fountain and huge iron girders spanning the thermal pool. The front part of the building houses an amusement arcade, and is where you are brought out into after the tour of the Aquarium. The aquarium is open daily from Easter to the end of October 10.00am to 5.30pm and at the weekends in Winter 10.00am to 5.00pm. The Aquarium - The former Victorian consulting rooms are now home to the aquarium containing a selection of British and Tropical freshwater species. From Piranhas to Terrapins and many interesting fish from different regions of the world including the beautiful Malawi Cichlids. Something of interest for all the family. Petrifying Well - Almost forgotten now, even in Matlock Bath where several wells were once visited by thousands of Victorian trippers. Here you can see the 'petrifying' process taking place in the working well as the famous Matlock Bath thermal water is sprayed onto objects gradually turning them to stone. Hologram Gallery - A fascinating and unique collection of three dimensional pictures produced by laser technology. Images which float in space before you, so real, you will not believe your eyes. Thermal Pool - The pool is fed by a spring from the hillside gushing 600,000 gallons a day, at a constant temperature of 20C. This is where patients would immerse themselves in the pool or take the waters to relieve rheumatic ailments and improve digestive disorders. Today, the health giving properties of the water are enjoyed by the famous collection of large Mirror, Common and Koi carp, weighing over 30Lbs. Visitors are able to feed the fish using the food provided next to the pool in a dispenser. Priced at 20p for a handful of pellets, it's well worth having a go. |

Description : Petrifying well Date photo taken : 19th October 2002 Other Information : This is the famous petrifying well. The passage it is located in was built during the 1780's to carry the thermal spring water from its source to the bathing pool of the fountain bath, which occupied this site from 1786 until 1883, it was then replaced by the Matlock Bath Hydro and the existing thermal pool. The water is rich in minerals, particularly calcium from the local limestone. As the water evaporates it leaves a deposit of calcium carbonate. Here you can see the 'petrifying' process taking place in today's well. The heavily mineralised water is spraying onto the objects encrusting them with lime salts and 'turning them to stone'. In Victorian times, there were several wells in Matlock Bath and they were known as dripping wells. The 'petrified' objects, such as wigs, brooms and bird's nests were very much in demand and the local people sold them as curios to visitors. |
