• Photos of Buxton in Derbyshire, England.
In the late 18th century Buxton followed the fashion of Bath and other centres and was developed as a spa by the great local landowner, the 5th Duke of Devonshire. At the time, he was making vast profits from his copper mines at nearby Ecton in the Manifold valley, and these are reputed to have paid for his building work in Buxton.

Other Information : This is the Crescent. It was built for the Duke between 1780 and 1784 by John Carr, out of locally quarried gritstone, and included a ballroom and an Assembly Room as well as a town house for the Duke of Devonshire.

Other Information : This is the the old hall hotel, where Mary Queen of Scotts once stayed!. This is reputed to be the oldest hotel in England.
This hotel is located just to the left of the Cresent.

Pavilion Gardens, which were built by Edward Milner in 1871. The gardens are wonderfull, See next two photos The adjoining octagon is a favoured location for antiques fairs and craft fairs.

Other Information : This war memorial stands at the top of the Slopes. It is of a similar design to the one in the village of Hadfield, where the strange British comedy The League of Gentlemen was filmed.

 

• Photos from Solomon's Temple in Buxton, Derbyshire, England.
The top of Grin Low is capped by Solomon's Temple, a folly built in 1895 by public subscription. It is a great place to see the area from due to it being at an altitude of 1,440 feet . This victorian folly stands on the site of a Bronze age burial mound or tumulus.
It takes about 20 mins to walk up to the tower from the Poole's cavern car park.
