Once you click on one, it will open a new window and the presentation data will be loaded, this should not take more than a minute or so on dial-up modem or just a few seconds on Broadband. Once it has loaded it should auto-play, The fading will repeat back and forth forever. You can pause the fade at any time using the Pause button. Just click the Play button to restart the fading. To quit the presentation just click the red X Quit button or close the window.
For more info read see the main then and now index.

These are interactive fading images presented using Adobe Flash, You must have a screen resolution of 1024x768 (or greater) to view these presentations, I have designed them so that they use as much of the browser viewing window as possible. A reasonable specification PC is required (850MHz+) otherwise the image fading will be extremely slow. If you enjoy watching these presentations then please leave some comments for my guest book by using the link at the top/right of this window.

Photo Description : Derby River Gardens view 1, Derby, Derbyshire.
Image Reference No. : DP-TAN-DRG1-36
Details : Scene showing the River Gardens and Exeter bridge over the river Derwent.
Photo A was taken before the Council House was built on the left side. The Exeter Bridge we see in both photos was built in 1931 and opened by the then Minister of Transport, Herbert Morrison. This bridge replaced the previous 1850 bridge which had 3 arches.
Things to look for : Exeter bridge, the silk mill tower and the river gardens steps are all that really remain today. Derby power station (built in 1893) dominates the skyline in Photo A. I think the original River Gardens looked beautiful, I wished I had been around at the time to photograph it.

Photo A taken : 1938 (postcard)
Photo B taken : January 1st 2005
Time elapsed : 67 Years

Photo Description : Derby river Gardens view 2, Derby, Derbyshire.
Image Reference No. : DP-TAN-DRG2-37
Details : Scene showing the River Gardens at the back of the Bus Station, The open market to the right of Photo A. The River Gardens and Water lily Pools were opened on 10th November 1933. They were designed by C H Aslin, of the City Architect's Department, (who also built the Bus Station). The bronze Turtle in the pond was one of a pair that was moved to Allestree Park when the riverside gardens were altered.

Things to look for : Well what can you say !, Until I bought this postcard I did not realise that the Derby river Gardens used to be so nice. Seeing my 'then and now' just goes to show how this area has changed so much in time. The only key points left today are the Bus station window, the drain pipe to the right of it and the chimney (through trees).
The bus station closed on 23rd Oct 2005 and was demolished in the summer of 2006.

You can also watch a video of Derby River Gardens and how it used to look.

Photo A taken : 1935 (postcard)
Photo B taken : January 1st 2005

Once the Riverlights project is completed I will be able to repeat this shot with three stage show, a la 'then, then and now'.

Photo Description : Markeaton Brook, Derby, Derbyshire.
Image Reference No. : DP-TAN-MBW1-38
Details : Scene showing Markeaton Brook Winter to Summer.
Things to look for : This then and now shows the changes that take place at Markeaton Brook walk (back of Agard street) between Summer and Winter, Also Photo B shows the construction work being carried out on Brook street (the crane). This now means it is not possible to see the Cathedral from the foot bridge over Markeaton Brook. This presentation goes to show that the original photo does not have to be that old, just older than Photo B.

Photo A taken : 16th May 2004
Photo B taken : 30th December 2004
Time elapsed : 7 months 14 days
