• Photos of Allestree, Derby
Allestree is a large, pleasant residential suburb, 2 miles north of the city centre, still surrounded by parkland. Much of its growth has taken place just in the last 40 years.

Allestree has a shopping centre in the form of the Park Farm Centre, opened in the 1970's

Since 1833 there has been a school in Allestree, originally with the support of the Evans family, wealthy local benefactors. Today the suburb has infant, junior and secondary schools.

There are some references of prehistoric tracks in Allestree such as the Portway. This is probably the main thoroughfare of Cornhill which now meets the A6 just outside the village.
Allestree was probably a thriving Medieval Settlement, the arable fields are still visible in the ridge and furrow in Allestree Park.

In the Doomesday Book Allestree is named as an outlier of the Manor of Markeaton.
In the late 18th century the ownership of most of Allestree passed from the Mundays of Markeaton Hall to the Evans of Darley Abbey.
The Evans were early industrial entrepreneurs and had cotton mills at Darley Abbey (see HERE) where many Allestree people worked.

Allestree is now one of 15 conservation areas in Derby. The North side of Allestree on Cornhill shows 7 listed buildings. 6 are statutory listed and 1 is locally listed. The earliest of these is believed to be 16th century although much altered and restored.

• Photos of Allestree Park, Derby
Allestree Park is exceptionally scenic and comprises a mixture of woodland, open parkland, a lake, a hall and a golf course. The park dates from the end of the 18th century when the present hall, a Grade 2 listed building, was built.

By the 1930's, after a succession of owners, a developer who had hoped to build 2000 houses and a golf course bought the land and the hall. The golf course and some houses on the edge of the park, were in place at the start of the Second World war. The army then requisitioned the park and hall. After the war, ownership passed to Derby Corporation, now the City Council, who continue to preserve the park for the people of Derby.

The lake is split into 2 parts and is very popular with anglers. The path around it is easily negotiated and signposts point out places of interest. Wildlife is abundant. A one and a half mile long nature trail follows an easy, reasonably flat, route around the lower part of the park, including the lake shore.

Next to the hall is a pets corner and includes a fish pond, rabbits, ducks, peacocks and Jacobs sheep. The house contains a golf shop and a bar.

Allestree park has 300 acres of parkland and a large Golf course with 18 holes
(5806 yards). The golf course was founded in 1949
