Description : Site of the old Derby Gaol, 50-51 Friar Gate Date photo taken : 21st June 2001 Other Information : This was the site of the Derby Gaol, originally built in 1756. The original prison was demolished and the Georgian houses you see here were built on top of the cells in the basement. You can now take a tour there to see where condemned criminals lived their last hours. This was a prison from 1756 to 1824. Click HERE to view a location map of the Derby Jail (Friargate Gaol) |

This is the Penny Dreadful from when John Needham was killed in 1833 in front of the new country prison, now known as Vernon Gate.. A 'Penny Dreadful' was a broadsheet flyer that detailed all the facts about the man who was to be killed. These were sold to onlookers as the prisoner was killed in public.. |

Condemned Cell, known as "the room". |
Condemned cell door markings. Here you can see the actual marks left by prisoners in the condemned cell. Notice on the right side the date 1818 and at the bottom there are some initials inside a square. |

This
is a chopping block where the prisoners would have their bodies cut open.
They would be kept awake during this process by having cold water thrown
onto their faces to make sure they endured as much pain as possible. Very nasty! |
