Then and now photographs of Derby and Derbyshire.

"A truly unique way to see changes in time using two perfectly lined up images, one old & one new."
High quality and resolution interactive fading photos showing local scenes as they were and how they are today from exactly the same view point.
Then and now, Now and then, Past and Present, Old and New, Before and After. Call it what you want, just try one and see the effect!.
To view a presentation just click on a thumbnail photo below, (the thumbnail image shows the image as it is today.) Once you click on one, it will open a new window and the presentation data will be loaded, this should not take more than a minute or so on dial-up modem or just a few seconds on Broadband. Once it has loaded it should auto-play, The fading will repeat back and forth forever. You can pause the fade at any time using the Pause button. Just click the Play button to restart the fading. To quit the presentation just click the red X Quit button or close the window.
For more info read see the main then and now index.

These are interactive fading images presented using Adobe Flash, You must have a screen resolution of 1024x768 (or greater) to view these presentations, I have designed them so that they use as much of the browser viewing window as possible. A reasonable specification PC is required (850MHz+) otherwise the image fading will be extremely slow. If you enjoy watching these presentations then please leave some comments for my guest book by using the link at the top/right of this window.

Photo Description : Breadsall Railway Station view, Breadsall, Derbyshire.
Image Reference No. : DP-TAN-BREADSAL1-106
Details : This view shows the former Breadsall Railway Station in the village of Derbyshire. In photo A you can see the Signal Box and the Railway station on the platform, The same view today has changed drastically, All that remains of the station and platform is a pile of moss covered bricks, If you visit this location and have a hunt around for clues then you will see that there is a layer of Tarmac amongst all the trees which would have been the top of the platform. Just out of shot to the right of Photo B you will find a concrete post with a hinge pin on it, on this used to hang a white gate similar to the one you can see in the photo DP-OLDGDC-02 on here. It took me quite a while to locate this exact location as so much has changed in 60 years and references are few and far between!

Photo A taken : 1945
Photo B taken : 17th June 2005
Time elapsed : 60 years

I would like to thank Graham Dewsbury for providing Photo A, See his other photos on my page here.

Photo Description : Portland Arms pub, Normanton, Derby, Derbyshire.
Image Reference No. : DP-TAN-PORTLAND-107
Details : This view shows the former Portland Arms public house. This pub was located at 53 Pear Tree Street, which was the corner of Pear Tree street and Prince's Street.
The pub was a beerhouse at first, then obtained a full licence in 1930 when it was rebuilt to include 4 extra cottages making it a very large public house.
The pub closed in 1975 and was Demolished in 1977. The square of land on which the pub and houses stood was cleared some time after 1985. Today this area is used as a playing field for local football teams. If you know any more details on when the houses were cleared etc then please drop me a line.

Note that there are several books by Maxwell Craven which say it was located at
89 Prince's street, having done some research on this I have confirmed that these are wrong. Number 89 is part way down the street and on the opposite side, The correct location is definitely 53 Pear Tree Street.

Upper south Street was a small road that was a continuation of South Street across Uttoxeter Old road. The Blue Bell pub was demolished in 1972. There was also another pub on the opposite corner of Upper South Street called the Earl Grey.Today you would have never known that there were two public houses located on this area of grass and trees.

In Photo A is the Congregational Chapel built 1846, this fine building was converted into a cinema in 1935. Photo Description : Florentine Boar in Derby Arboretum, Derby, Derbyshire.
Image Reference No. : DP-TAN-ARBORET-110
Details : This view shows both the original and the new Florentine Boar Statue. The
The new statue was built by Alex Paxton and is based on a copy of an ancient marble on display at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, the old Arboretum boar is probably based on a copy at the Ufizzi in Florence and not the bronze in the Marketo Neuvao (Straw Market) in Florence. All of these statues vary slightly in appearance.

For more details on this new statue please visit the Derby Arboretum website.
