"A truly unique way to see changes in time using two perfectly lined up images, one old & one new."
High quality and resolution interactive fading photos showing local scenes as they were and how they are today from exactly the same view point.
Then and now, Now and then, Past and Present, Old and New, Before and After. Call it what you want, just try one and see the effect!.
To view a presentation just click on a thumbnail photo below, (the thumbnail image shows the image as it is today.) Once you click on one, it will open a new window and the presentation data will be loaded, this should not take more than a minute or so on dial-up modem or just a few seconds on Broadband. Once it has loaded it should auto-play, The fading will repeat back and forth forever. You can pause the fade at any time using the Pause button. Just click the Play button to restart the fading. To quit the presentation just click the red X Quit button or close the window.
For more info read see the main then and now index.

These are interactive fading images presented using Adobe Flash, You must have a screen resolution of 1024x768 (or greater) to view these presentations, I have designed them so that they use as much of the browser viewing window as possible. A reasonable specification PC is required (850MHz+) otherwise the image fading will be extremely slow. If you enjoy watching these presentations then please leave some comments for my guest book by using the link at the top/right of this window.

Photo Description : Matlock view 1, Derbyshire.
Image Reference No. : DP-TAN-MV1-62
Details : View looking down Matlock Parade, Matlock Bank.
Things to look for : The post box that was originally embeded in the wall on the left is now a pillar box around the corner. This road is very busy, the lady pushing the pram across the road in Photo A would have no chance these days! The river Derwent flows beneath the bridge ahead.

Update : Jan 2008 - In late 2007,The Matlock bypass opened, This means that the view I took in 2005 has changed again. The bridge ahead is now a one-way street and the new bypass entrance is on the left where the railway station car park used to be. There is now a Sainsbury's supermarket in Matlock.
You can take a virtual drive around the new road system here on my YouTube video.

Pupils, amongst whom briefly were two of the grandsons of Sir Richard Arkwright1, were taught in the old school building for over three centuries until the new school was built on the Green Road.

Photo Description : Derby Grand theatre viewed from Gower street, Derbyshire.
Image Reference No. : DP-TAN-DGTV-65
Details : View looking down Gower street towards the former Grand theatre (now Mc Cluskys in Photo B). The theatre opened in 1886 but burned down within a month of opening. It was rebuilt and reopened in 1904. The trees and building on the left were council offices (designed by George Thompson). On the right was the retaining wall of the gardens to Abbott's Hill House, (Built 1720, demolished 1927). Gower street was ancienty called Blood Lane. McClusky's closed down in 2006 and after investing £300,000 refitting the premises it re-opened on July 19th 2007 as May Sum, a Chinese restaurant.

Things to look for : The Grand theatre building undergoes some alterations but manages to survive time. The council offices to the left are demolished. Abbott's Hill House is replaced with Hunters Furniture store building.

Photo A taken : 1910 (postcard)
Photo B taken : 3rd April 2005
Time elapsed : 95 years
