• Photos of the Queens visit to Derby Cathedral, Derbyshire, England
On Friday 14 November 2003 at 11.30 am, Her Majesty the Queen arrived outside Derby Cathedral to attend a Service of celebration and thanksgiving, She then opened the new Derby Cathedral Centre. This was the first visit by a reigning sovereign to the Cathedral in the Cathedrals thousand year history. This was the third time in the last six years that the Queen has visited Derby. The previous visits were both to Pride Park stadium, firstly in 1997 to officially open the stadium and then in 2002 when she visited as part of her Jubilee celebrations.

These are my exclusive photos taken from the press area, I managed to be the first to get them on-line, in less than an hour after taking the last one. Hope you like them!

Hundreds of people turned out to give a warm welcome the Queen despite the rather cold blustery conditions.
Many passing flowers and gifts to her as she greeted members of the public.

The new £1.25 million Derby Cathedral Centre is located in the former Clulows book shop, a Grade II listed building at the junction of St Mary’s Gate opposite the Cathedral.

The project to renovate 18/19 Irongate into the Derby Cathedral Centre was part-financed by the European Regional Development Fund and Onyx Environmental Trust Derby was awarded approximately £10 million pounds in 2001 through the DCP delivery mechanism of an ‘Action Plan’ in the city.

Over the period 2002 to 2003, the Cathedral plus appeal focused raising money to renovate, 18/19 Irongate an 18th Century Grade II listed building, located opposite the Cathedral, to create a Visitor Centre.

Work on the new centre began in January 2003. The Centre opened to the public in September 2003 and on the 14th November her Majesty officially opened it.

After her tour of the Centre she was whisked away to her next Derbyshire visit of the day, which is Chesterfield Market.
