Photographs of the 2005 Willington Raft Race,
This page features pictures from the annual event in South Derbyshire.
|This annual event raises money for charity. This year the raft race took place on Saturday 11th June. The teams are made up from local pubs around Willington area.
The rafts navigate down the River Trent starting at Newton Solney, (Trent Lane) and paddle towards the finish line at Willington Bridge (Willington Road).
Hundreds of people turned to see the race, they lined the edges of the bridge and the river banks near the finish. Along the route groups of people waited with bags of flour which they threw and even catapulted at the rafts as they passed by.
There were fifteen rafts in this years race, Some of those taking place were:
The Pink ladies, The Privates, Chequers Inn, The Swan Inn, The Green Dragon, Shipwrecked. All the rafts completed the route without too many problems, Each one greeted with cheers as it sailed under Willington Bridge.
I would recommend going to see the raft race next year, look out for the signs in Willington Village a few weeks before the event for details.
