Alvaston is an Anglo-Saxon village which dates from at least 1002

The
Carnegie Library which once stood at the front of Alvaston Park was for several years supported by wooden beams as it lay empty and was finally demolished in 1968 owing to subsidence.

There used to be a timber merchants on London Road, before you get to Wicks, Called Hall & Martin Works, then it changed its name to Magnet Southerns, Navigation Garage (petrol station & car sales) there was also a little wooden hut where a man named Reg Burrows used to sell motorbikes.

On the corner of London road/Burnaby street once stood the Alvaston cinema (REX) which was operated by the Alvaston Picture Theatre Co Ltd. It opened on March 2nd 1925 and closed in October 1966 when it became a Bingo hall. The cinema had a capacity of 650 and a unique entrance through laurels and rhododendrons, flanked by iron railings on either side.
The building was demolished in July 1983 after several fires, the area is now a modern car showroom.

• Photos of Alvaston Park, Derby, Derbyshire, England.
Alvaston Park is another popular public park in Derby. This one has it's own lake which has lots of ducks and geese. The park also boasts a BMX track and a bowling green. The River Derwent runs along the back of the park. In early 2003 a skateboard park was built here. Parking for the park is located in front of the park on London road or in the main car park near the bowling green which is accessible via Meadow Lane (to the east of the park)

The lake used to be fed from a stream on the south-side of the lake, The bridge where it entered the lake is still present today. This stream used to run past the right side of the former
Carnegie Library in a straight line to the lake. The source of this stream was Osmaston Park Farm (a farm which used to be part of Osmaston Hall, now demolished), from here is flowed east to the former Derby Canal and then north towards London Road and the Library.
