Photos of Allenton, Derby, Derbyshire It seems hard to believe but one the area around Allenton, as with Alvaston and Sinfin was covered in swampland. During excavations in the area, large animal skeletons have been found, hippopotamus, elephant, brown bear, hyenna and bison. The suburb was once known as Allentown after Issac Allen, who built the first houses in the area in 1878. It consisted of a few streets off the main Derby-Melbourne Road and several houses on the main road. He also built the Crown Hotel in 1891 at a cost of £1200. After
the first world war, there was an acute shortage of good housing in the
town. In 1926, Allenton was visited by Neville Chamberlain to view the
first iron framed houses to be put up in the country. There were 250 of
them. |
